Almost a decade with Meyer Wegener

How often do you change your e-commerce partner? We know many brands do it for almost every big project. With Meyer Wegener, the story is different. We have been working together since 2017. In that time, their online store has gone through some major transformations, while the team behind it has stayed the same.

Long story short: In 2018, CloudEBS migrated the Meyer Wegener online store from Magento 1 to Magento 2 and connected it to the company’s ERP, to marketplaces and to specialised online catalogues. The second big milestone came in 2024, when, alongside a complete redesign and a new custom theme, we added new and improved features for the online stores in Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Between these two milestones, the store has stayed in our care the whole time, so it runs fast and securely and always has the latest updates.

  2. 2018Magento 2 liveFull migration from Magento 1, a single catalogue for all markets, ERP integration.
  3. 2024Complete redesignA new custom theme, designed mobile-first and rolled out in stages in RO, HU and CZ.

Below you will find a few words about how we built the platform together and how we have kept a partnership that has stood the test of time.

About Meyer Wegener

Meyer Wegener Romania produces the Meyer and W. Wegener apparel collections in its factory in Romania and sells them directly in Eastern European markets. The brands are known for the impeccable cut of their trousers, as well as for their business and casual outfits. What makes them special is their sustainable European production, defined by premium quality at reasonable prices.

The online store is one of the main channels through which the collections reach customers in Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

2017–2018: from Magento 1 to Magento 2, without losing anything along the way

We started working with Meyer Wegener’s team in 2017, on a project not directly related to the e-commerce platform. That is also when we learned that their online store, built by another provider on Magento 1.9, was approaching the end of official support. They wanted to stay on a secure, up-to-date platform at all times, so the decision to migrate came naturally.

For Meyer Wegener, the migration could not be a simple data transfer. The store was already selling in several countries, stock came from several locations, and customers were used to the way the site looked. So we built the new platform around these realities:

  • The same design, a new platform. We kept as much as possible of the old theme and rebuilt it for Magento 2, with improvements in the key areas. Shoppers noticed more speed and stability, in a store they did not have to learn all over again.
  • A single catalogue for all markets. We set up each country’s website on the same platform. The team now updates a product once, and the change appears everywhere, with the right language, currency and price.
  • Stock linked to the ERP. We connected the store to the company’s internal systems, so stock from every source reaches the website automatically, with no need for manual syncing.
  • The first external channels. At the same time, we connected the store to a marketplace and to an online fashion catalogue.

The product catalogue, customer accounts and all previous orders were moved over in full. After the final tests, the switch took place as planned, within a few hours. When the store reopened, customers found their accounts with all their information, including their order history, exactly as before.

For the business, Magento 2 meant a faster, more secure platform that could grow along with sales. It also paved the way for the automations they needed in the years that followed.

One store, three countries, marketplaces, online catalogues, ERP, payments, couriers… all connected.

The Meyer Wegener store keeps all product information in a single catalogue. The websites for Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic all run from it. Each has its own language, currency and prices, with payment and delivery methods also tailored to each market. The client’s team manages everything from one place.

How we connected the store to the wider business ecosystem:

  • ERP integration. Stock from several sources syncs automatically with the online store. Shoppers only see products that are available, and the team no longer has to track and adjust stock by hand. Product attributes also come from the ERP, and orders are sent back to it automatically.
  • Marketplaces and online catalogues. The products are listed on major marketplaces in the region and on specialised online catalogues. This way, the collections reach a much wider audience and bring in additional sales, while the brand gains visibility, with no extra work for the team. How we connected the store depends on how each platform works:
    • Platforms that work with feeds receive files generated automatically by the store, with up-to-date product details, stock and prices. The team no longer prepares product lists by hand for each channel.
    • Platforms that offer an API are connected directly to the store. For each product, we control the description and attributes, the price and the stock separately. Orders placed there are imported automatically and kept up to date along the way.
    • Advertising platforms and product comparison sites also receive dedicated feeds. They helped us prepare the client’s campaigns, together with the tracking setup.
  • Payments and delivery. In every country, shoppers pay by card or cash on delivery. They receive their order at home or at a pickup point, through integrations with payment processors and local couriers.

Over the years, we have also added custom features, from catalogue filters to checkout validations and marketing tools.

2024: a redesign where the product tells the story

After several years on the same theme, Meyer Wegener wanted a more modern experience for its customers. They wanted an interface that would showcase the products better and bring a fresh feel, inspired by the best international fashion stores.

We started with an analysis of the existing visual materials and site structure. We built moodboards with examples from successful fashion stores and validated the page structure with the client using visual prototypes.

The direction was clear: a clean, minimalist design that does not draw attention away from the clothes. High-resolution product photography had to be the centrepiece. The structure would come from visual hierarchy, colour and the space between elements, not from decorations that clutter the page.

We did not create an ultra-luxury image, but one that reflects the brand’s personality exactly: premium quality at reasonable prices.

Sustainable European production now has a dedicated section, and icons explain materials and care instructions at a glance.

What changed for shoppers

  • Simpler navigation: a new menu with quick access to categories, search and dedicated sections.
  • Richer product pages: an intuitive photo gallery, colour variants and product families, reviews.
  • Smoother cart and checkout: a mini-cart, an intermediate cart page and a clearer first checkout step.
  • Mobile first: banners and blocks designed separately for mobile, easy-to-use filters, pages that load faster.

The launch took place in March 2024, in stages, with dedicated testing for each country. Some areas had changed a lot compared to the old version and needed a short adjustment period. We refined them quickly, together with the client, based on early reactions, post-launch analysis and customer feedback. The response was largely positive, and mobile traffic and orders grew steadily after the launch.

What has kept the partnership going for almost a decade

Big milestones always stand out. But it is the daily work between them that keeps an online store running. At CloudEBS, we host the platform on our own Magento-optimised hosting and keep it up to date with updates and security patches. The team that manages the store can rely on us at any time, for any issue or new idea. Before busy periods such as Black Friday or collection launches, we test the entire ordering process and check that the servers can handle the traffic. And during critical periods, we monitor everything constantly and do not publish any changes.

Beyond the technical side, four things have helped build a lasting relationship:

  1. We understand the business, not just the requirements. After almost 10 years, we know how the client’s seasons, collections and priorities work. This lets us propose solutions, not just carry out tasks.
  2. We talk openly. We discuss even the difficult topics transparently, with a focus on solutions. Every conversation has its channel: email for approvals and requests, phone for emergencies, online meetings for planning.
  3. We are proactive. We do not wait for problems to appear. We come up with recommendations for the platform, for campaigns and for the shopping experience.
  4. We make decisions quickly. When something changes in the market, we can adapt in days, not months.

“With Meyer Wegener, it has long stopped being just about carrying out technical requirements or providing support. We know their business, we know when the seasons change, when the campaigns run and what their priorities are. We often propose solutions before a problem has really appeared. I think that is what turned this project into a partnership.”

Frequently asked questions

Was any data lost in the migration from Magento 1 to Magento 2?

No. The migration was planned in detail: we moved the product catalogue, customer accounts and order history, and the store was offline for only a few hours, in a window agreed in advance.

Can I sell in several countries from a single Magento store?

Yes. Magento 2 supports multiple websites on a single installation and a single catalogue. Each country has its own language, currency and prices, with payments and delivery adapted locally. Management, however, stays in one place.

Can you redesign a store without changing platforms?

Yes. In 2024, we built a new custom theme for Meyer Wegener on the same Magento 2 installation. We changed how the store looks and works for shoppers without another data migration, and the launch was rolled out in stages, with dedicated testing for each country.

What does integrating Magento with an ERP bring?

Automatically synced stock, which means fewer orders that cannot be fulfilled. On top of that, product information comes straight from the ERP, and orders go back to the ERP without manual data entry.

Why a custom Magento theme instead of a ready-made one?

A custom theme follows the brand’s identity and the way its customers shop, not a generic template. You control every step of the checkout flow, and the mobile experience is designed to work at its best.

What does Magento store maintenance include?

First and foremost, it means security: the platform stays up to date with security updates, is monitored around the clock and always has backups and a recovery plan. Every change is tested before it goes live. It also covers preparing for high-traffic periods and supporting the team that manages the store.

Thinking about a migration or a redesign?

Maybe your store runs on a version that is no longer updated. Maybe your theme no longer represents your brand. Or maybe you want to sell in more countries and on more channels without growing your team. We have been through all of these stages with Meyer Wegener, and we know where the bumps in the road are.
